The Dark Side of Fad Diets
Fad diets are diets designed to be followed for only a short period of time. The term has also come to mean any diet that explodes into national or international fame, only to plummet into obscurity. Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. Any time one particular food suddenly becomes a superstar, that’s a food fad. Common aspects of these fads include:
- Some elements of the food are said to have miraculous properties.
- Some foods must be avoided because they have equally amazing powers, but that do bad things.
The Atkins diet displays the characteristics of one of these fad diets. In this diet carbohydrates are the Keystone element that is negative and therefore to be avoided. Low carbohydrates are extremely desirous in Atkins, because then the body enters a super fat burning condition. Although it is a long-term diet, it did have short phases during which carbohydrate cutting was taken to the extreme. However, many people are able to continue the Atkins diet for years.
As with many have diets, Atkins popularity was extreme and short-lived. For a number of years the Atkins diet was everywhere, and everyone seemed to be following it . Every movie star, singer, and sports figure claimed to use the Atkins diet when they needed to lose weight. But after the death of Dr. Atkins, the diet became much less of a household word.
Many fad diets can be quite dangerous. The Subway diet made popular in television commercials wasn’t exempt. It was based on the legend of Jared, a young man who’d lost nearly 250 pounds in only a year by eating Subway sandwiches, baked chips, and diet soda. Jared’s diet was severe — going down to 900 calories a day from over 10,000. That could have killed him. Even so in moderation the Subway diet can work, particularly when combined with exercise — Jared walked 6 miles a day. Let’s talk about workouts. Approach fad diets with caution. A long-term eating strategy combined with moderate exercise is usually the better bet.
